Cultivating mental health - gardening your way to a healthy mind

A garden is Nature’s tonic for the soul

We all know the benefits of spending time surrounded by green. This has been backed by extensive research and proven by personal experience. If you cast your mind back to the anxiety of the first lockdown in March 2020, you’ll remember how all of us suddenly became either avid bakers or avid gardeners. So if it wasn’t banana bread that got you to wind down, it was getting your hands dirty.

Many believe plants themselves have healing qualities but aside from being in their presence, the gratification and fulfilment you feel when seeing your plants flourish, aids your mental prosperity. There are many psychological benefits of gardening:

  • Gratification: The feeling of watching something you nurture grow and come to fruition is rooted in pride and purpose.
  • Acceptance: Not everything is in our control and we can grow to appreciate things for their imperfections.
  • Connection to creation: Appreciating the earth and all its intricacies helps ground us and give us perspective.
  • Exercise: From tackling weeds to turning soil, gardening can be a serious workout. It gets the heart pumping between lungfuls of fresh garden air and can even release endorphins to lift your mood.
  • Recovery: There is evidence that being surrounded by green, or even being able to look out on a green landscape, is linked to better recovery from surgery, anxiety, depression, and stress.

Just as a healthy soil with good physical qualities is regarded as being in good tilth, we can improve the health of mental tilth simply by spending time tending to and cultivating plants – either in the presence of greenery or outside in the sunshine.
